Hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device, where digitally encoded data is stored on rapidly rotating platters and magnetic surfaces. Hard disk consists of a spindle which has the capacity of holding one or more flat circular disks called platters. The data is recorded in these platters as it has the ability to store data more than what is stored in floppy disk. Users can also access and transmit data at faster speed. The boost in disk space and access speeds of hard drive has facilitated the profitable feasibility of products like digital audio players, video recorders and mobile phones demanding greater storage capacities.
Despite of advanced technology, the problem we all are coming across is permanently erasing data or files from hard disk. We think that erasing files and deleting the content of Recycle Bin means getting rid of those files permanently. But this is not the case. Even after emptying the Recycle Bin, files can be recovered by different data revival programs.
Formatting the hard drive is also considered to be an effective method of erasing the data from hard disk. Although formatting process is only more secure than deleting the files from recycle bin, but it should
be clear that formatting a disk only erase the address tables. So, recovering files become more difficult and you will have to rush to a computer specialist.
A new technique gaining popularity these days is Disk Wiping. It is a more secured method to ensure that individually licensed softwares and storage devices can be irrecoverably deleted before recycling. A better method in comparison to other conventional methods, disk wiping overwrites the entire hard drive many times. Once the hard disk is formatted, you may find it nearly impossible to get the old data back.
Disk wiping runs on various algorithms, which vary from product to product. Most of them write the entire disk with digital codes zero or one and then an entire reformatting is required.
Darik’s Boot & Nuke and Eraser are two free programs gaining recognition for erasing data amongst more technologically savvy computer users. These tools offer complete privacy that all your sensitive personal information is deleted and it can not be recovered later. If you are still not sure that deleted files are permanently gone, you can opt or file deletion management system. These systems initially scan your computer, find all the traces of erased data and remove all the discarded data including your e-mail messages.
