There are various characteristics, which should be considered while purchasing a laptop. Many companies come out with processors or the CPU with different speed and capacity. The standard CPU is usually 1.4 to 1.6GHZ, but 3.0GHz has also been launched by companies. Other important factors to be considered are processor power and the battery consumption, which are interrelated. Lithium Ion batteries are mostly used these days.

Next important component is hard drive, which stores the data files and programs in the computer. Capacity of hard disk varies from 20GB to 40GB, 60GB and can go up to 120GB.

All the running applications and data is stored in RAM. Basic laptops contain 256MB of RAM space, which can be increased upto 512MB or 1024MB. Buyers must prefer to buy increased capacity RAM if they want to download music and videos in their laptop.
 
Laptops have LCD screen in varying sizes of 12" to 14" or even 15". The resolution for standard screen is 1024x724, which should be kept in mind before purchasing a laptop. TFT LCDs are becoming increasingly popular these days because of their better display options.

Graphic card is inserted to provide better display capacities to laptops. If you are going to store many presentations and slide shows, then it is better to buy 32MB or 64 MB video graphic card. Your laptop should contain USB port to transfer the data from USB device or vice versa.

Laptops also come with LAN and Ethernet facilities these days. It depends on the preference of buyer if he wants this facility or not. The most important thing, buyers should never forget is checking the warranty of laptop before purchasing. More the warranty period, better will be the quality. Wise purchase and usage of laptop makes it more efficient and gives a better performance than what is expected from it.
