Sending unsolicited e-mail to many people involve spam. It is one of the most common practices in the internet world. On an average, a person receives 30% of his or her e-mail as spam. Thus, there is a huge demand for existing and new techniques like spam blockers, spam filters and creation of e-mail whitelist to block spam.

The most unfortunate part of how spam works is that it is very simple. All a spammer need to do is collect large number of web addresses and some unwanted advertisement that can be sent to hundreds of people. Some spammers use software that makes the spamming process easier.

The process of E-mail spam involves sending out an ad to hundreds of recipients. Many people now-a-days refer to spam blockers, which either bounce the unsolicited e-mail back to the sender or send the spammed mails to a trash folder after filtering. The spam e mails are stored in the folder for a particular time period so that the user can read it if necessary. E-mail spam is the most common form of spam, but there are other forms of spam appearing on instant messenger accounts, newsgroups, blogs as well as mobile phones.

What makes it easy for spanners to send spam mails is that there is no operating cost involved in their scheme as well as the newest filtering systems are sometimes unable to filter spam. Even though these anti spam filtering programs are effective in weeding out spam but spammers are becoming equally sophisticated and are using suspicious looking headings and subject lines. It can be said that spamming is as simple as sending an email, except that the sender has to manage large e-mail lists.

As spamming is illegal and highly discouraged in some places, many spammers are worried to avoid recognition. At this point, what they usually do is launching their spam campaigns from other computers or Zombie computers, which send spam for them. Once the security devices are by passed by them, spammer can obtain sensitive information from PC for unsolicited bulk mails.

Another method is getting a hold of email addresses making them send spam. This is dangerous for spammer as he might be unaware that he is sending spam since other computer is controlling his PC. As a result, the unwitting spammer might get placed on blacklist or even lost internet service and denied access to some of the chat groups. This is really problematic as spammer faces stiff fines and there are possible chances of incarceration.

Spammers are becoming very careful about getting caught and being blocked. They send e-mail saying a simple “Hi” or do not put a heading. Spam filters sometimes do not catch these mails as they are not vigilant about such subject lines. Some spammers deliberately misspell words to avoid being caught by the filter.

Spam is all too easy process but many e mail users now prefer setting up whitelists that allow only selected people to e-mail them. Therefore, it becomes impossible for spammers to by pass these walls and minimizes the risk of virus to zero.
