The simple definition of a team is a 'group of people working towards a common goal'. And a good team is the one where the whole of the team is greater than the sum of its parts. This means, all members of the team work for the common goal in collaboration with each other. When a team works in order to achieve a common goal, how well it achieves is completely depends on how well its members work in collaboration with each other.
The types of team can be classified into two groups- permanent teams and temporary teams. Well, permanent teams are created with a constant goal in mind, while temporary teams are created when a particular need arises. A temporary team can also be called as a problem solving team, task force, product design team or a committee. Such teams are organised keeping some short term objectives and projects in mind.
- Problem solving team: This is where people comes together in order to resolve particular issues rather than simply investigate.
- Task force: It is developed in order to investigate certain problem or issue that arises suddenly.
- Product design team: Such a team is created to design the intricacies of new products that are going to be launched. And once the product is designed, the can be disassembled.
- Committee: A committee is created in order to deal with an urgent issue, which is temporary.
In the same way there are many kinds of a permanent team- a work group, a work team and a quality circle. Such teams are developed in order to deal with the day-to-day work issues of an organisation or company. These last for a longer period.
- Work group: It is a group of people, who are being hired to perform the various objectives of an organisation. The members of a work force are required to report directly to a leader, who is known a team leader.
- Work team: This is where a group of people work towards a common goal but, it doesn't have a leader, thus it is often called a self-managed work team.
- Quality circle: This permanent team comprises people who are from the same association. They come together to seek work improvement opportunities.
Regardless of any type of team, team work has great benefits. Teams are require proper management and incentives to increase performance and deliverables. By adopting different team building methods, an organisation can get maximum output from teams.
