One of the common internet scams is Phishing. It is a criminally fraudulent process, where sensitive information about an internet user is acquired. Hacking accounts or passwords to obtain personal information are some of the ways under phishing.
Phishing is either performed through electronic mail or instant messaging. Under this process, users are asked to enter their personal details in a fake website. The worst part about these websites is that they look legitimate and trusting. Once, scammers are able to convince the user to enter their personal information, they are able to access important details about the users. Mainly, these information is used for fraudulent purposes like withdrawing money out of ATM or bank accounts.
Even if you use strong cryptography, there might be chances not to detect such fake websites. Though, phishing techniques have been prevalent on the internet as early as 1987 but it was first recorded in 1996. The term rhymes with the word fishing which means to catch.
