Every car has a different registration number and it is important that it should be displayed on the vehicle. In 1904 it became a rule that all the vehicles were supposed to be registered on the government vehicle register and have to display their number plates. This made it easier for police to trace a vehicle in case of theft or an accident.

Different countries have different number plate patterns. The number plates of UK have individual characters and numbers. The usual shape of the plate is rectangle. The registration system in Great Britain is seen by Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and the Northern Ireland is monitored by Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA).

Along with plate, the actual font used on the plate should also confirm to the legal requirements of the driving agency. In UK “Charles Wright 2001”font is being used, and it has been condensed for an optional blue “GB” Euro surround. The characters of number plate are suitable font as one can clearly distinct between characters
like “8” and “B”. This helps a lot in the number plates identification software used by police. Use of italics is illegal on number plate.

Now a days, many people desire to get personalized number plates or modify their existing number plate, which is against the law. The strategical positioning of screws, use of electrical tape and repositioning of characters can draw wrong attention to a vehicle. The owner can also be made to give fine. Therefore, going through correct channels is really important to obtain a personal registration plate.

The number plate system that is currently being used in Great Britain was introduced in 2001 and consists 7 characters number. The optional graphic on the left of the plate identifies the European Country where the car is registered, and the two following letters are the area code. The first letter is meant for region and the second one indicates the local registration office. The following two characters are used as age identifier, which changes two times in an year. The last three sequence of a letter have no particular reference.
